Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences educates and trains osteopathic physicians, research scientists and other health care professionals, with an emphasis on serving rural and underserved Oklahoma.

College Description

Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OSU-COM) is focused on training doctors for serving rural and underserved populations. Our small class sizes foster an environment of personal attention and strong relationships with faculty and staff and lay the foundation for a successful practice in osteopathic medicine. A little more than half of OSU-COM graduates practice in primary care (family practice, pediatrics, internal medicine, and obstetrics and gynecology) and about 45% practice in specialty areas such as dermatology, neurology, surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, ophthalmology, psychiatry, anesthesiology, radiology and gastroenterology.

Facilities:

• Located on the west bank of the Arkansas River, minutes from downtown Tulsa, the OSU Center for Health Sciences campus is housed in a modern, four-building complex on 16 acres. The complex consists of classrooms, basic and clinical science teaching laboratories, offices, research areas, lecture halls, break-out rooms, a medical bookstore, library and cafe. Attached to a five-story parking garage is the new A.R. & Marylouise Tandy Medical Academic Building. This state-of-the art facility features new lecture halls, clinical skills and OMM labs, study carrels, a conference center and a four suite simulation center.
• The new OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine at the Cherokee Nation is an additional teaching site located in Tahlequah, OK. The new 84,000 square foot facility includes a gross- and neuro-anatomy laboratory, clinical skills and OMM labs, standardized patient labs and a simulation center that features state-of-the-art computer programmable manikins. There are also lecture halls, classrooms, faculty offices as well as study carrels, a gym and mindfulness areas. Tahlequah is unique in its location, centered in the midst of the Illinois River Valley, with Lake Tenkiller and Lake Fort Gibson close by to provide unlimited recreation and beautiful scenery.
• OSU Physicians Network operates seven area clinics including the OSU Health Care Center. The healthcare center serves as both a teaching clinic for students and a healthcare resource for the community. At this comprehensive clinic, faculty physicians, resident physicians and osteopathic medical students treat a large and varied patient load. The Health Care Center includes 37 patient exam rooms, radiology lab, student learning center and physician offices, and offers services in general healthcare, osteopathic manipulative medicine and psychiatry, and houses a women’s health center.

Student residence options:
OSUCOM does not offer on-campus housing, but there are a number of affordable housing options within 10 minutes of our locations in Tulsa and Tahlequah. There are several apartment complexes and house options in the surrounding neighborhoods where students rarely have a commute over ten minutes. In Tulsa, many students live near campus where they have easy access to downtown Tulsa and its entertainment opportunities, the River Parks trails along the Arkansas River, and the world-renown Gathering Place riverfront park. In Tahlequah, most students opt to keep their commute under five minutes while being within walking distance of local restaurants and several of the area’s many outdoor recreational areas, including the scenic Illinois River.

The curriculum at OSU-COM emphasizes the integration of biomedical sciences with clinical systems. The curriculum includes early hands-on clinical experiences with patients, patient models, and simulations. Instructional methods are student-centered and include traditional lecture, small group and team-based learning. Problem-solving and informational retrieval skills are emphasized to produce and develop skills that support lifelong learning. The culture of OSU-COM encourages students to establish an academic relationship with faculty members and community-based physicians. The curriculum emphasizes integration of biomedical with clinical and behavioral sciences to permit the full comprehension of the clinician’s work and promote a holistic approach to the care of patients and their families. OSU-COM third- and fourth-year students have the opportunity to do their rotations at our teaching hospital and across the state of Oklahoma. OSU-COM offers an elective Rural Medical Track (RMT) that prepares medical students for a rural primary care residency and successful practice. Key facets of the RMT are rural-based clinical education and a guided research component focused on contemporary rural health topics. OSU-COM offers elective tracks that prepare medical students for a primary care residency and successful practice in rural, tribal, or urban underserved areas. Key facets of the elective tracts are population-based clinical education which train students to provide culturally competent care and a guided research component concentrated on contemporary rural, tribal, or urban underserved health topics.

DO/PhD
This dual degree program is an excellent education option for students who wish to pursue careers in medical research and/or academic medicine. Students must apply and be accepted to the DO and PhD programs in the same cycle. Students complete four to five years of graduate study, research and dissertation of the PhD program before matriculating to the traditional DO program.

Tribal Medical Track
The Tribal Medical Track prepares medical students for a primary care residency at tribal facilities and a successful practice in tribal, rural and underserved Oklahoma.

Rural Medical Track
The Rural Medical Track is designed to prepare students for a rural primary care residency and a successful practice in rural or underserved Oklahoma.

Global Health Track
The Global Health Track enhances experiential learning for our medical students and exposes them to international health experiences and cultures in resource-deprived countries.

Stress Management Program
A program dedicated to creating a sustainable culture of wellness and to helping medical students develop mental resiliency by providing them with the tools and activities to cope with stress.

Senior Mentor Program
All first- and second- year medical students are paired with older-adults to develop the interpersonal skills required by physicians and gain perspective outside of the student’s own generation.

Admissions Process

OSU-COM sends supplemental applications to all applicants upon receiving their verified AACOMAS application. All on-campus interviews with the applicant interview committee are by invitation only and are mandatory for further consideration. The application must be complete prior to receiving an invitation to interview. Following the on-campus interview applicants are notified of the admissions decision either by phone or email.

First-Year Class Matriculants’ Selection Factors

In recommending candidates for admission, the college considers all factors, including preprofessional academic achievement, evaluations from preprofessional committees and osteopathic physicians, MCAT results, data obtained in the on-campus interview and student motivation for a career in osteopathic medicine. The college is looking for demonstrated scholarship, aptitude and motivation for admission to the program. The admissions committee recommends applicants for admission. Final selection of candidates to be offered admission is made by the Dean. All applicants must meet the minimum requirements to be considered for admission. Provisional offers may be extended to allow for the completion of in-progress/planned coursework.

Preference is given to applicants from Oklahoma. Non-U.S. citizens who do not have a permanent resident visa (“green card”) at the time of application cannot be considered for admission.
