Mission Statement

The mission of the Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine is to train the osteopathic physician of the future to provide effective, empathic, and innovative care to optimize the health of patients and their communities.

As the first college of osteopathic medicine in the state, the Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (KansasCOM) strives to make a positive impact by directly addressing the disparity in access to health care. KansasCOM’s innovative approach to osteopathic medical education includes a curriculum focused on creating the most empathetic, patient-centered physicians possible.

At KansasCOM, we aim to:

1. Embody the tenets of osteopathic medicine. We believe in the body’s interconnected ability to work within itself to heal and are committed to the osteopathic approach in medical education.
2. Teach the art and science of medical care so students can evolve with technology and commit to being lifelong learners, preparing them for the future of health care.
3. Engage students in case-based patient presentation models to train them as effective problem solvers, not just fixers.

KansasCOM was formed by Kansas Health Science Center, a nonprofit organization committed to training well-prepared physicians and health care leaders who will positively contribute to the overall well-being of communities across Kansas and beyond.

The Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine is proud to be centrally located in the heart of Wichita, Kansas’ largest city and a thriving, diverse center of culture and industry. Our campus encompasses a 116,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art college of osteopathic medicine and research center, outfitted with the latest technology to help power education, including A.V. equipment, touchscreen interfaces, virtual and augmented reality, a non-cadaveric anatomy lab, and data analysis software. Additionally, students may also take advantage of an on-campus cafe and library.

Our KansasCOM program is based in the patient-presentation curricular model. Students will learn primarily through studying clinically based cases that highlight the symptoms to which a patient presents, with the end goal of efficiently and effectively arriving at a differential diagnosis. Students will participate in early clinical experiences within the first year, which helps enhance practical understanding of patient presentations and differential diagnoses. Classroom instruction will embrace the latest cutting-edge technology, including augmented reality and non-cadaveric anatomy, as well as team-based learning to improve understanding and retention of information.

Admissions Process

KansasCOM seeks strong applicants who have demonstrated academic success in the classroom and commitment to the medical profession through their clinical experiences. Strong applicants will also have demonstrated examples of professionalism, empathy, and compassion through their service and leadership experiences.

Applicants are encouraged to review the minimum requirements to determine their competitiveness. Once a verified AACOMAS application has been received, if the minimum academic criteria have been met, a secondary application will be sent to the applicant. Applicants who reach the secondary application phase are required to complete the CASPer situational judgment test (Altus Suite) and have their scores released to KansasCOM prior to being considered for an interview. Secondary applications, in addition to letters of recommendation, CASPer results and the AACOMAS application, are reviewed to determine if an applicant will be invited to interview. Applicants who are invited to interview will be informed of their decision (Accept, Denial, Waitlist) within several weeks following the interview. KansasCOM admissions utilizes a rolling admissions process.
