CHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine Mission

To graduate exceptional Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine by:

College Description

Located in the beautiful Fresno suburb of Clovis, within the agriculturally rich California Central Valley, the CHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine (CHSU-COM) is the first full 4–year medical school in the region and the third College of Osteopathic Medicine in California.  

Aligned with the University mission, the College of Osteopathic Medicine strives to recruit, train and retain future physicians to serve the Central Valley of California, especially the underserved population. 

CHSU-COM utilizes small group learning and incorporates the latest technology such as holographic anatomy and handheld ultrasound throughout our curriculum. Our Osteopathic Principles and Practices/Clinical Skills lab optimizes learning with a hands-on diagnosis and treatment modality to promote health and wellness, optimize recovery from musculoskeletal trauma, disease and post-surgical conditions, and help prevent illness. 

Facilitated by our team of dedicated educators, our innovative program is designed to train caring and competent physicians. Because proper nutrition is essential to good health, we have included Nutrition as a component throughout the curriculum. We have also designed early service–learning opportunities in which students will be embedded in a community health care facility.

Clovis, CA: Suburban, 4 miles east of Fresno. Fresno Yosemite International Airport, which services 8 airlines, is minutes away from the campus. Restaurants, shopping, and affordable housing are all conveniently available in walking or short-driving distance. Since we are centrally–located, trips to coastal beaches, beautiful mountains, and major cities are within a few hours’ drive.

Facilities:

• Our College of Osteopathic Medicine building at 2500 Alluvial Avenue in Clovis, California welcomed its inaugural class in July 2020. The facility includes a state-of-the-art, 90,000 square foot 3 story building offering views of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. There are large classrooms which include technology–enhanced features to facilitate the active-learning curriculum. Unique features of our facility are the Teaching and Demonstration Kitchen, which allows students and the community to learn the importance of proper diet in relation to good health. The 20,000 square foot Simulation Center is appointed with leading-edge technology. Students learn in a safe environment that combines technology and simulated experiences of real-world situations in both an outpatient, 12-room clinic setting and a 7-bed hospital wing.

Student residence options:
CHSU-COM does not have on-campus housing. There are housing units available to rent, lease or purchase within a few miles of the campus. These properties offer a wide range of affordable rental rates depending on number of bedrooms, amenities, etc.

Learning Years 1 & 2 

• CHSU-COM utilizes a clinically-integrated two-pass systems-based curricular model, shown to improve knowledge, retention, and performance. This model integrates:

A primary teaching method during the first two years of the curriculum is Team-Based Learning (TBL), supplemented with:

CHSU-COM trains future physicians to be lifelong learners and champions of evidence-based medicine through their engagement in research and scholarly
activities. Every medical student must participate in a longitudinal clinical experience, beginning in year 1 and extending throughout years 2-3,
incorporating a population health/community medicine project, leading to a final poster presentation or publication.

Learning in Years 3 & 4

The core clinical clerkships during years 3 and 4 are based at regional hospitals, clinics, and health care facilities with health care providers in the community. There are 9 hospital systems within driving distance of CHSU, with ample clinical settings for learning in years 3 and 4. Third year Medical Students rotate through clerkships in the following areas:

The third-year curriculum also includes dedicated board prep time.

The 4th year of medical school has ample opportunities for audition rotations, for students to showcase their abilities and prepare for the residency match. Required

Admissions Process

CHSU-COM seeks to admit those students who possess the academic, professional, and personal qualities necessary to become exemplary osteopathic physicians. CHSU-COM uses a rolling admissions process in which applications are reviewed and interview decisions are made at regular intervals during the admissions cycle. To be competitive within this process, applicants are strongly encouraged to apply early in the cycle.

The AACOMAS application and all other required materials, which include MCAT scores, official transcripts, and required letters of recommendation, must be received on or before March 1, 2023. Qualified applicants will then be invited to complete the Supplemental Application process, which includes two essays, an Evaluator Identification Verification, and payment of the Supplemental Application Fee. Upon completion of the Supplemental Application process, selected candidates will be invited for a virtual interview.

Taking a holistic approach to admissions, the Admissions Committee will review the entire application package and interview performance prior to making a recommendation to the Dean. The Dean will make the final admissions decision and the candidate will then be notified by the Admissions Office.

First-Year Class Matriculant’s Selection Factors

Accepted students must meet all the admissions requirements as listed on our website at osteopathic.chsu.edu/admissions. CHSU-COM uses a rolling admissions process in which applications are reviewed and interview decisions are made at regular intervals during the admissions cycle. Minimum Requirements, 2022-2023 Application Cycle:

• Baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
• Overall Cumulative and Science grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  – If a student has retaken a course multiple times, all grades received for that course will be accounted for in calculating the cumulative GPA.
• Minimum MCAT: 498, with no subsection below the 15th percentile
  – Scores from January 1, 2020 or later will be accepted
• Satisfactorily complete Prerequisite Courses prior to matriculation
  – Must be completed with a C or better
  – Advanced Placement credits will be accepted for English
  – Must be completed at an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
• 2 Letters of Recommendation
   – One physician (D.O. or M.D.)
  – One Science Faculty who has instructed the student
  – NOTE: A pre-med or pre-health committee letter that includes items listed above will satisfy the requirements

International students (non-U.S. citizens or temporary residents) considered: Yes. CHSU-COM does not accept international students. CHSU-COM accepts only U.S. Citizens, U.S. Permanent Residents, and DACA recipients. Applicants who are not U.S. Citizens are encouraged to familiarize themselves with licensing requirements in the state where they plan to practice, to ensure that their residency status will not limit them from obtaining a medical license.

Interview Format

Candidates will complete an interview with one or more members of the faculty. The purpose of the interview is to assess oral communication skills, professionalism, and the applicant’s potential and motivation to be an osteopathic physician. If an applicant is offered an interview, they will be provided several interview dates from which to choose. Additional interview details, including other topics and events included in the interview day, will be provided to applicants upon interview invitation.
